Beat Procrastination Today!
We all know that time is one of the most valuable resources. No one wants to waste it. So
why do we? Unlike money, gold and other material things, the time we spend can never be recovered. It is therefore important to use and manage our
time wisely. How can we beat procrastination today?
One really effective way save time is to stop procrastinating. Many people tend to delay doing things that can be done now. When procrastination continues in our lives, not only do we waste time but
we use up our valuable energy resources. How do we do that?
Say you have something to do that you are not looking forward to starting. You think about it in the morning when you get up, you think about it in the shower, and you think about it on your way to work. On your way to work you start to get irritated at yourself for not starting it. What do you think this attitude about
yourself does to your energy level and continuing the procrastination cycle? How different would you feel about yourself had you just taken a small step towards starting the task?
Some find it hard to break procrastination. It can be a behavior learned early in life and sometimes it is hard wired into our subconscious mind. We as human beings
often do things out of habit without even realizing. Awareness is the first step to changing a behavior. Once you are aware that you do not like the behavior, you can start to take steps to change it.
Try these five tips to break the habit of procrastination:
- Start doing the task at hand immediately when there is something that needs to be done. Do not wait until you are "in the mood" for doing it as it is likely that time will never come. Just by taking a small step, your mood will improve as you will feel a sense of accomplishment.
- Start with the easy tasks and finish these first. Once the easy tasks are out of the way, you will feel good about your accomplishments and this will spark your mood to do more.
- Do not aim for perfection when doing the task at hand. What matters most is getting started. Pursuing perfection to great detail can derail the whole process. You can spend too much time trying to get something perfect (which it usually isn't anyway), and the frustration of it all can cause you to quit what you are doing completely.
- Write down your plan. It is very effective to have a written plan because you can decide which things are most important and which need to be addressed immediately. You can actually be more productive and save time by not doing the unnecessary and/or less important tasks.
- When writing down your plan, make a schedule of when you will be doing the tasks. There should be a deadline set for all those things that are most important and need to be addressed immediately. You can also set deadlines that are further in the future for those less important tasks.
Remember that getting started is what is most important. You shouldn't be frustrated if you
are unable to make every single deadline that you have set. The idea is to begin to change your behavior and have a system for doing so. Give yourself a reward for
accomplishing your tasks. You will see your energy level rise as you accomplish more. You will actually have more time and energy to do things you enjoy as you
will not be burdened with all the things that you have not done. Beat procratination today! You deserve to feel great about yourself!
